Electronic Apex Locator
I have tried a bunch of electronic apex locators, like Foramatron, Root-ZX, Apex NRG, etc.
I can get them to work some of the time but I cannot depend on them. I still am taking measurement radiographs for every case which wastes a lot of time. I would really like to get settled with a reliable apex locator. What apex locators are you using and what are your recommendations?

I´M NOT AN ENDODONTIST BUT A PERIODONTIST. HOWEVER, I HAVE ONE IN MY STAFF. SHE IS USING ROOT ZX (MORITA)AND PROPEX (DENTSPLY)WITH EXCELLENT RESULTS. ROOT ZX HAS MUCH MORE RESEARCH PUBLISHED, BUT THE SECOND IS A GOOD OPTION. MY ENDODONTIST IS AN OPINION LEADER IN MY COUNTRY AND SHE´S A LECTURER FOR DENTSPLY. IN HER OPINION, USING APEX LOCATORS DOESN´T MEANS YOU ARE NOT TAKING Rx INTRAOPERATIVELY.
YOU HAVE ALWAYS TO CHECK OUT HOW THE TREATMENT IS GOING, BECAUSE APEX LOCATORS DOESN´T GIVE MUCH INFORMATION ABOUT INTRACANAL ANATOMY.

I have been using the RootZX for at least 10 years. The times it has not given me reliable lengths have been few and far between. It is sometimes necesary to control the bleeding or remove the bulk of the pulp tissue in the apical part of the canal before you can get an accurate reading, but these are the exceptions rather than the rule. I know that Morita claims their RootZX works in spite of blood and tissue in the canal, but I have not found this to be consistantly true. Sometimes it's true and sometimes it isn't. I have no idea what makes the difference.
