Dr. C. asks:

PromaxI have a PlanMeca ProMax Digital Pan machine, upgradable to CBCT. I am wondering if I should upgrade to CBCT? Does anyone have experience with this machine to comment on durability, quality, etc. ?

I’ve had many little nagging mechanical problems, all taken care of by manufacturer under warranty, but am cautious of additional investment of moving to CBCT. I’ve had marginal success with Tomo features. Thanks for any comments.

If you need 3D-imaging for your treatment procedures (CBCT does not replace Panorex) you could easily upgrade the ProMax to get volume tomography at the highest quality. I did an analysis of 18 products and ended up buying the Planmeca machine: best value at this price. Be prepared to spend lots of time getting acquainted with the software.

I got the planmeca promax 3D in Jan 07, and am using it more and more. I got the N Liten software they sell to view pathology, etc,. It is fantastic.
I also use simplant and import the images into simplant for their computer generated surgical guides. These cases have been going very well and I am very glad I made the jump.

Does anyone have an idea about the cost to upgrade from the Promax to Promax 3D?

  • ET August 27th, 2008

I have heard that the upgrade price is somewhere in the ball park of $150,000US. Seems a little steep seeing how a large investment has already been made in the initial purchase. I have however found a company in Houston, TX by the name of E-Woo Technologies USA that has a Picasso Trio 3 in 1 unit that gives you the ability to have Digital Pano’s, Digital Cep’s, and Cone Beam CT capabilities all for $165,000US in 1 unit. This includes a computer, EzImplant Treatment Planning Software, Installation, Training, and 5 years software updates. They can even assist with selling off your existing unit. I would think that it is worth a look if you are interested in moving into 3D.

It is not the upgrade price that should bother you but the liability. 3D volumes are complicated to interpret and dentists are not trained to do so. Companies are pushing it. Also, one of my friend got an mail saying that he could be in direct violation of “Stark law” which prevents doctors from profiting of imaging. It just seems like it a huge lawsuit waiting to happen

We recently did a review of all the best EXTRA-ORAL x-ray machines with and without 3D prior to buying one for our clinic and settled on PLANMECA promax 3d. If You want more info such as pics and layout go to our clinic website diestelandpartners.com or e-mail dr sandeep jain at drjain@diestelandpartners.com.

We are a hong kong dental clinic doing mainly general dentistry and also implants, Oral Surgery, Orthodontics and Periodontal gum surgeries as we have a group practice and we really needed 3D capabilities. If you are a solo practice than an OPG machine Planmeca PRO-ONE would be fine, resolution is better and can give some bitewing visibility and has the smallest size with only 1 pillar to support and no legs to take up space.

Also shortlisted were Kodak 9000D which was cheaper but slightly bigger but easier to use as we already use Kodak intra-oral x-rays.

E-woo was also good but similar price in HK and also bigger, plus we did not need lateral Ceph.

Hope the above helps you guys.

    Cheers

We have (2) clients with the ProMax and one recently upgraded to the CBCT. I have not heard any complaints on this piece of equipment nor the upgrade process. If you feel the CBCT functionality would be of benefit to your practice and the ROI numbers look right, then I would suggest moving forward.

How can I find a dentist in the Houston, Texas area that uses a PLANMECA ProMax machine?

  • Harrison October 24th, 2009

Not to sure. Plenty of Vatech / E-Woo Users in that area though. Have you seen their new 2 in 1 or 3 in 1 PaX Reve 3D. Great looking machine that does Pans,One Shot Ceph’s & 5×5 - 15×15 ct. If you are thinking about a new combo technology unit, You gotta see it.

I have a Pan machine now, 6 years old. All areas of office 6 years old also. Am retiring expected 4-5 more years. Is the CBCT too big a purchase at this time in my career? Will it add to resale of practice? Thank you for any insight.

How does the Planmeca 3D unit compare to the I-Cat, and the Sirona Galileos?

  • Marianna Evans January 30th, 2010

I am searching different CBCT units for my future ortho/perio practice.

Does anyone have experience with E-WOO Pax-Reve3D.

I am mainly concerned about image qualities compared to ICAT and liability issues.

    Thank you for your feedback,

    Marianna Evans

    Hi Everybody,

I am a Planmeca representaive and can tell you the upgrade on an existing Promax is between $78,000 - $100,000 depending on the volume size you choose. Please contact your local dealers for an official quote and demo.

  • Mark Langlais June 19th, 2010

    Hi Everybody

Just wanted to clarify the prices above are only good through then end of August 2010, prices are subject to change depending on promotions. Upgrading is a great choice because the staff is already familliar with the unit and we now provide online training where you can sign up with staff to go over Romexis or watch previously recorded sessions. Any questions do not hesitiate to ask, I can direct you to the appropriate Planmeca representative within the U.S.A & Canada
