While the actual screwdriver body and pilot drill for the Membrane Fixation Kit and the Tenting Screw Kit is the same, the screws for each kit are very different, and the screws from one kit will not fit into the holding block of the other. In addition, the Tenting Screw Kit comes with specific tenting screws, while with the Membrane Fixation, you get to choose your own fixation screws.

Specifically, the Tenting Screw Kit comes with 24 specialized tenting screws (all 1.6 mm in diameter and 4 different lengths) for use in the “tenting” technique. This technique involves the use of graft material in combination with specialized titanium screws, in a “tenting” fashion to augment large, localized, intraoral, vertical alveolar ridge defects. These tenting screws will not fit in the holding block of the membrane fixation kit. On the other hand, the membrane fixation kit is indicated for use with screws that aid in membrane and block bone fixation. There are 5 different diameter screws to choose from and each diameter comes in 6 different lengths. When you buy this kit, you can choose the screws you want.

Importantly, the membrane fixation screws will not fit in the screw holding block of the Tenting Screw Kit. If you would like both the Tenting Screw Kit and the Membrane Fixation Kit, you can of course, buy one kit and then buy individual screws separately. However, as mentioned above, the membrane screws will not fit in the tenting screw block, and vice versa. Although, it is up to each clinician to choose the screws that best fit for a particular case, the most popular size screws for block bone fixation are: - 1.6 X 8 (D x L) (SKU: AU-16-008) - 1.6 X 10 (D x L)  (SKU: AU-16-010)  - 1.8 X 10 (D x L)  (SKU: AU-18-010)

Although, it is up to each clinician to choose the screws that best fit for a particular case, the most popular size screws for membrane fixation are:

• 1.2 X 3 (D x L)  (SKU: AU-12-003)
• 1.2  X 4 (D x L)  (SKU: AU-12-004) 
• 1.4  X 4 (D x L)  (SKU: AU-14-004)

The screws are self-tapping. It is therefore recommended to use the pilot drill, or corresponding diameter of drill, in the cortical layer for the initial engaging/insertion. However, initial drilling is not recommended in some soft bone conditions.

As an additional explanation, since this topic is confusing, we can also provide a brief explanation of the difference between self-drilling and self-tapping screws. Basically, self-drilling screws do not need a pilot hole because of the drill bit end. On the other hand, self tapping screws tap their own thread, so they need a pilot hole slightly smaller than the screws diameter. The confusion is that in some instances, like in a case of soft bone, a self-tapping screw can also be self drilling.

What our customers have found, is that in most of the cases they don’t really need to use a pilot drill. The screws are self-tapping and sharp enough to penetrate by themselves, especially short length screws. With longer screws, like 6mm, an initial pilot drill maybe necessary.

Sterilization

Yes, the entire kit (including the surgical plastic cover) is autoclaveable.  Please remember, though, that the Fixation Screws are single-use only.

Completely dry all tools using a dry cloth or warm air before autoclaving. Dried tools should be stored in the KIT case.

After placing all the tools back into the kit, dry the entire kit in an Autoclave (15 Minutes At 273 ̊F / 134 ̊C - 15psi) and then store the kit at room temperature.

It is recommended to use a surgical autoclaving wrap around the kit when sterilizing the kit, so that no part of the kit touches the metal of the autoclave unit.

Cleaning Instruments

Following use, individual instruments should be cleaned throughly. Instruments should be washed with a non-corrosive, low sudsing neutral detergent. Cleaning of individual instruments can be accomplished by ultrasonic or automated cleaning (Warning: Do NOT place the entire kit in an ultrasonic, as doing so could damage the case. ONLY individual instruments can be cleaned with ultrasonic). Manufacturer does not suggest the use of any abrasive brushes or materials to clean.
